It's the European Digital Identity Wallet: a free phone app that lets you prove your identity and keep, share and sign your important documents, securely and privately. Every Member State offers at least one version, built to the same standards so it works everywhere in the Union. Romania's version is RO Wallet. It doesn't replace your documents; it brings them into digital form, with the same legal value and extra control over what you show.
No. You use RO Wallet only if you want to. It's a simple, secure digital alternative to the traditional way you prove your identity today, but the choice is yours. The state is required to make the wallet available; no one requires you to use it. You can use the wallet for some things and the traditional methods for others - it's not a final choice, and you can change your mind anytime.
Only what's strictly necessary for the service you asked for, and only with your consent. You can show exactly the piece of information requested - for example, that you're over a certain age - without revealing the rest of your data. You also have a history where you can see, at any time, who you shared data with and for what purpose. In many cases you don't even need to show a whole document: a simple yes/no answer is enough - for example 'is over 18' - with no other details.
Only authorised providers: public authorities and institutions, as well as accredited private organisations such as banks or universities. Every issuer must be registered and verified in the ecosystem, so documents from unknown sources can't end up in your wallet.
Your data stays protected. Access to the wallet is locked by your phone's security - PIN, fingerprint or face recognition - so no one else can use it. If you lose your phone or it's stolen, you report it and the wallet is deactivated immediately: from that moment it can no longer be used, and the documents in it are no longer valid. You can obtain them again on a new phone, through a secure process. That's why it's worth re-adding your documents to a new phone in good time, so you're not left without them at a crucial moment.
Every European Union country must offer its citizens a digital wallet. Romania is working on RO Wallet, and after launch it will gradually gain new features. The EU-wide target is the end of 2026; we'll announce the exact date for Romania as soon as it's confirmed.
