RO Wallet changes that. It keeps your documents within reach and gives you a safe, simple way to show who you are - only when you want to, and only as much as needed.
Whether you're opening a bank account, applying for a job or enrolling at a university abroad, it works fast and your data stays private. You're the only one who decides what leaves the wallet: no one reaches into your data behind your back, and no one follows your every move.
The European Digital Identity Framework entered into force in May 2024. Every Member State will offer at least one version of the wallet, built to the same common standards, by 2026. Romania's version is RO Wallet.
Sorting out paperwork, signing a document or proving your identity now takes just a few taps on your phone. No trips across town, no queues, no folders full of photocopies. Public and private services become faster - and your time stays yours. Renewing a document, identifying yourself at the bank or the notary, signing up for an online service - steps that used to cost you a day off now take a few minutes, from anywhere.
When a service asks for certain information, you decide whether - and how much - to show. Only what is strictly necessary is shared, with your explicit consent, and the rest never leaves your wallet. No one tracks you, no one pieces together what you do, and no one builds a profile behind your back. You always have a sharing history at hand: see who you shared data with, exactly what, and why - and you can ask for processing to stop at any time.
RO Wallet follows the same European rules as the digital identity wallets in every other Member State, so it works beyond the border too. Prove your identity and use your documents in any EU country, with the same legal value and recognition. As easy as it is at home - on holiday, while studying, or when accessing an online service from abroad. For the millions of Romanians who work, study or travel across Europe, it's one identity, valid everywhere. No sworn translations, no apostilled copies, no trips between offices in different countries: your document is recognised as it is, digitally.
Keep your ID, driving licence, diplomas, certificates and other important documents in RO Wallet - and present them whenever you need to, straight from your phone. They come from official sources and carry the same legal recognition as their paper counterparts. And when a document is updated at the source, the version in your wallet always stays the valid one - no more expired paper in your pocket.
RO Wallet is built in Romania, through a joint effort of public institutions, companies and technical and security partners. It rests on secure infrastructure where the privacy and protection of your data and transactions are designed in from the start, not bolted on later. You, the citizen, are at the centre of the whole project: the wallet is made to serve you - simply and at any hour - not to collect information about you.
RO Wallet protects your personal data and gives you simple access to public and private services, in Romania and across the European Union. The documents in your wallet come from official sources and carry legal recognition. The whole ecosystem is built on European rules and technical specifications that guarantee cross-border interoperability and recognition in every Member State. The same rules apply to every Member State, so you don't depend on the goodwill of a single company or platform: the standard is public, verifiable and mandatory everywhere.
RO Wallet is built to work together with other services, following common European rules. Institutions and companies can build their own digital services on the same shared foundation, whatever the country - without reinventing the wheel each time. For businesses, this means lower integration costs and access to users across the Union, all starting from the same open specifications.
RO Wallet meets the highest European standards for security and privacy, protecting you from fraud and identity theft while giving you full transparency and control over your data. No one can access your personal data without your explicit consent. No one can see what transactions you make, what services you use or why. No tracking, no profiling. And if you suspect someone asked for more data than they needed, you can report it to the data protection authority directly from the wallet.
The wallet is rolled out gradually, in step with the other European Union countries, which are also launching a digital wallet from December 2026. Over time, more and more features - and more and more situations where you can use it - will become available. As more institutions and companies join, you'll be able to use RO Wallet in new situations - from health and education to financial services and travel.
